Hi! I’m Mikell!
I’man artist, life long learner, coach and educator with a passion for lessons from nature. My subjects include animals and plants, with a strong emphasis on herbs, totems and symbolism. My blogs, herbal and articles, often feature descriptions of my illustrations featuring stories, myths, legends, crafts and recipes. Water color and mixed media are my favorites, and I layer illustrations on collages made from painted tissue papers. I find beauty in all aspects of nature, including insects, wild flower and plants often dismissed as weeds. Looking for assets in people, nature and situations enables me to find beauty, hope and inspiration every where! |
Nature has always been the inspiration for my art. When I moved into a little fishing cabin next to the Yellow Breeches Creek, fish, herons and dragonflies inspired me. My pumpkin seed fish caught the attention and author who commissioned me to illustrate a book for children using animals to promote dental health.
Years later, my cabin flooded and I relocated to Baltimore, MD where I took and gave courses at the Renaissance Institute at Notre Dame University of Maryland. Illustrating my Enhancing Your Life with Herbs course with more than 200 water color sketches kept me immersed in herbs (defined as "any plant that is useful.”) My work with Healthy Communities and years of volunteering with adjudicated youth and women in prison taught m there is value in everything, even plants many people step on! My daughters encouraged me to return to central Pennsylvania after the pandemic and I’m delighted to be living ins a darling little log cabin. I’m continuing to paint, sketch, gardening and currently exploring surface design. |
