Squirrel Gardens!
Last year I was delighted when daffodils, narcissus and hyacinths showed up in my garden, and I was certain the girls had planted them by the plow out front and by the side door of the cabin. They hadn’t. After further research, we decided the most likely gardener was a squirrel who was always digging around in those areas. The gorgeous flowers are back this year. I was relieved that he didn’t decide to use them to landscape another home!
Revisitng Childhood Through Illustrations
Yesterday my phenomenal family, my two daughters and my son-in-law, choreographed a birthday trip to Hagerstown, MD. This is a very brief overview because the day was filled with adventures, but I really want to encourage all my book lover friends (all of you?) to go to the exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts Washington County.
Seeing illustrations from books I loved as a child was heart warming, but even more delightful was reminiscing with my daughters about books they loved growing up. There were books I was unfamiliar with that I need to look up, and an illustrator who attended clown college who was very intriguing! Many surprises!
There is also a Picasso on Paper Exhibit that is fascinating. Here’s a piece of worthless trivia! Did you know Picasso had 15 names? "His full name, not necessarily in this order, was Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno Crispín Crispiniano María de los Remedios de la Santísima Trinidad Ruiz Picasso. At first, he incorporated his second-to-last name, Ruiz, into his signature — his earliest paintings were signed P. Ruiz, then P. Ruiz Picasso, then P. R. Picasso. He signed just “Ruiz” for some cartoons. Eventually, he settled on plain old “Picasso.” From Interesting Facts.
I recently read an article on how our present self and our childhood self - in spite of a lifetime of experiences - are still the same person. That gave me different perspective for viewing the exhibit.
Do you have a favorite children’s book? A favorite illustrator? Even if you can’t make the exhibit, it might be fun to revisit some of your favorites!
The exhibit will be there until March 17. Visit if you can, and if you do, please let me know your reactions!

My first newsletter of 2024 featured my New Year’s Manifesto and encouraged my subscribers to create their own. Several people sent replies and shared thoughts and insights, and as always, getting feed back is greatly appreciated! Thank you!
One of my favorite responses was from Clarence Watson, a health teacher at an urban high school in Steelton, Pennsylvania. He shared the newsletter with his students and encouraged them to write their own manifestos. He sent me several, and I was so impressed with their self disclosure, originality and creative insights that I asked for, and received, their permission to share!
If you’ve ever felt a need to set realistic goals, guidelines and boundaries, you may find the reflections of these students helpful. You can tell they gave a great deal of thought to create them, and all are unique and personalized.
We invite you to pour a cup of tea and take some time to read their manifestos. Their thoughts may resonate with you, or inspire you to think of something from a different perspective. You can simply read and reflect on what they have written, take a few notes, or create your own personalized manifesto. I think you’ll find their perceptions inspiring! I certainly do!

Sacred and Symbolic Swags Workshop was a Delightful Success!
Thank you to Susana Brill Reppert at the Rosemary House in Mechanicsburg, PA for arranging the workshop, and to Nancy Reppert as Sweet Remembrances, also in Mechanicsburg, for providing such a beautiful space!
Participants created gorgeous swags as they learned about the history of why evergreens were hung on our doors (the black chicken came first!), and how each of the herbs provided offered different types of protection. They also learned about the history and legends associated with each of the evergreens. Everyone received a sprig of white pine, cedar, juniper, holly, ivy, mistletoe and rosemary. Pine cones and ribbons were also provided. Each sway was unique! A few of the participants were camera shy but all were proud of their creations!
